Macros 101: A No-Nonsense Guide to Flexible Nutrition
Ask ten people what "macros" means and you will get ten different answers, most of them half right. Here is the actual, simple version, and why it works better than a meal plan for almost everyone.
What macros actually are
Macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates, and fat, the three categories of calories your food is made of. Tracking macros means hitting daily targets for each one instead of just counting total calories. It gives you a target and lets you choose the food.
Why flexible beats rigid
A meal plan tells you exactly what to eat every day. It works until life happens: a birthday dinner, a work trip, a bad week. Macro targets flex with your life because you are hitting a number, not following a script. That is why we build every nutrition protocol at One Family Fitness around macros instead of meal plans.
The three numbers that matter
Protein: the pillar most people under-eat, and the one most tied to muscle retention and fat loss
Carbohydrates: your primary fuel for training, not the enemy
Fat: essential for hormone health, not something to minimize to zero
How we actually use this with clients
Every client's targets are set based on their body composition data from an InBody scan, their goals, and their activity level. From there, the plan adjusts over time as the data changes, not on a fixed schedule. No moralizing food into good and bad, no 90 day resets. Just numbers that move as you do.
Where to start
If you want your actual numbers instead of a generic calculator estimate, an InBody scan is the fastest way to get real data to build from.
